“Life now is so cheap!” "You think you are sexy. Come on, be frank with yourself”.
These are just some of the voices from Speakers’ Corner, an area located in the Northeast corner of Hyde Park, where only the brave can pull-off colourful debates and encourage successful crowd interaction.
Every Sunday, since 1872 Speakers’ corner attracts thousands to hear the latest debates, which discuss almost anything from talks on human rights to convincing theories on the end of the world.
Standing on ladders, they use their body language to express passion as they talk. Many are regulars; although anyone can turn up, ladder in hand spouting their own beliefs or theories. But be warned, the regulars do not take kindly to newcomers.
Marcel, a French tourist said: “it is amazing because it inspires people to reflect on their lives and the societies they are living in.”
Famous for political debates and demonstrations since 1872, when the Parks Regulation Act came into force - allowing debates to take place in public. The site is open to anyone who wants their voice to be heard.
Historical figures such as Karl Marx, George Orwell have all spoken here. So if you feel the need to get something off your chest, or fancy a good old heckle, Offbeat suggests try it out, but at your own risk.
