Davenports is the oldest family run magic business in the world, and provides a fascinating combination of both history and modern tricks. Possibly the most fascinating part is they teach you magic, and turn you into a magician, just like one of them.
With a “Ding-dong” sound as you open the door you will be amazed at how full the shop is. All display cases are filled with magical props such as disappearing finger balls and floating rings. The ground-to-ceiling shelves, facing the entrance are also stockpiled with the latest magical gadgets.
Davenports produce and sell over 1,400 items to magicians for their performances. Books and DVDs on magic are also available, with some second-hand ones a good bargain.
A long and glorious family history
The shop was opened by Lewis Davenport in 1898, and he later built a career as a magician by performing in the clubs of London’s East End in the 1920s and 30s. Eventually the whole family became involved in the famous Lewis Davenport Act.
The Act was revived by Roy Davenport, the fourth generation of this amazing family when he staged his 2004Davenport’s Christmas Wonder Show at the Auden Theatre in Holt, Norfolk.
According to John Derris from Magicweek.co.uk: “Roy is possibly one of the most courageous and visionary British magicians to date, and will undoubtedly become one of the biggest magicians of the 21st century.” Judging by Roy’s career highlights, nobody would doubt this:
